Grade 5 - Introduction to Mechanisms Using Electricity - Written Element
We will be learning about electricity by building and testing a circuit. In pairs, please gather your equipment list below. We will demonstrate the basic method of constructing a simple circuit. In pairs, complete your circuit and answer the questions on the appropriate pictures below. If you have questions, please ask Mrs. Penner! Have fun!
Equipment Required for each team:
1 battery,
1 bulb,
1 buzzer,
4 pieces of wire,
1 switch
Battery: Energy Source
What does voltage mean on the side of the batteries?
What does the symbols +/- mean on the batteries?
How should we line up the batteries when completing the circuit?
Switch: Opens & Closes the circuit
What is the purpose of the switch?
What happens to your light bulb or buzzer with an open/close the circuit?
If you did not have a switch, how could you open/close the circuit?
Light Bulb or Buzzer: Produces Energy
What types of energy will a light bulb/buzzer produce?
What happens when you connect more than one light bulb or buzzer?
Can you name three household items that require electricity or batteries?
light bulb
Team Challenge - Can you look up what the difference is between an insulator or a conductor is?
Tell me:
Bonus question: There are several items in the basket. Some of these items are called conductors and some of the items are called insulators. Can you identify the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
